Live Your Life With Passion and Purpose to

Become a Winner

What is life all about? How do we become real winners in this game of life?

I believe that all of us should live our life with passion and purpose. To really be all that you want to be and to help this world be all that it can be – each one of us must live on purpose.

Just look at the great accomplishments of the past. These were created by people who were passionate about what they did---and they sensed a greater purpose to what they did too.

It could be in business, in sports, in the medical field, as an attorney, as a social worker, or whatever area the passion lies. It's not about the money involved or even the social status one might get from it. It's putting our heart into it is what counts.

One story that struck me occurred in the 1996 Olympic Games in Atlanta, GA. It was the final day of the Women's Team Gymnastics and the United States team was running neck-to-neck with the Russians and the Chinese teams for the team gold medal. It was the last event for the United States women – the vault. One by one – each of our women did a great vault. They did two vaults – with the best of the two used in the final scoring.

It came down to the last of our vaulters. She was told that she needed to score high in order for the United States to win the team gold. On her first vault she injured herself, falling, causing a severe sprain on one ankle. She was told that she did not have to do her second vault – which the team would settle for the silver medal – if necessary. She made a decision that would define what courage, passion, and purpose was all about. She decided that she would do the second vault. She ran down the runway, jumped onto the springboard, planted her hands on the pommel horse, twisting and turning in the air, she landed on one leg – AND STUCK IT! She scored high and the United States won the team gold.

Later it was learned that she did not need to do the second vault, that the team had already won the gold.

But Kerrie Strugg had at the time the passion and purpose to do what it took to win. Her whole life of training for this one event was what gave her life meaning at the time. She did what she had to do to be a winner. And she proudly wears the gold medal that she won that day.

Do you have that kind of passion, that kind of purpose, to become a winner?

If you do not, then you may not be in the right field, the right career. When I studied what made some people successful and others not – it came down to whether somebody was passionate and had purpose in the area that they choose to focus on. Most of them were passionate from an early age.

Thomas Edison tinkered and created and came up with new ideas before his teenage years. He had a deep desire to find out how things worked and to improve up them.

What was in your early life that caused you to work hard at, but was more like fun? What is it that you do now that you work hard at, but is more like fun? Do you do things that take you well into the morning hours that you can't get enough of? And I'm not talking about partying either. Some people make a good living off of parties, though.

I've come across many business people that complain that their business is just not working or that they just can't seem to get interested in it - that they would rather be doing something else. Many people in their career feel the same way. Are you one of them?

Have you ever had some far off dream of doing something else? Maybe it was something from your childhood that you dreamed of doing. If you are in a career for the money or maybe someone told you that you should do this or that or maybe you followed your parents into the same field, but you'd rather be doing something else.

Most people feel that way. I should know - I was there too.

Another ingredient that must be present is desire. Part of our being is to have the desire to do something – to accomplish something. We all have this internal mechanism that will drive us to succeed. Without desire we will never, ever accomplish any goal or dream we may have. The desire must be burning. That's why going after our passion and purpose will enable us to have that kind of desire.

Just like Kerrie Strugg, who won an Olympic gold medal and others who win everyday – whether in business, helping homeless people, winning a court case, discovering a medical breakthrough – they all had a passion and a purpose, with the desire to get there. You must have this driving force, too.

So as I write this, I implore you to find your passion and purpose, develop a plan to reach it, and do it with desire. Only then can you know what real success means and what it is like to be a winner.

So you be a winner too.


Principled Communication

Since the publication of my book, The Seven Habits of Highly Effective People, I have worked with many wonderful individuals who are seeking to improve the quality of their communications, relationships, products, services, organizations, and lives.

But sadly, I see many people using a variety of ill-advised approaches. In effect, they try to apply short-cut, manipulative practices learned in academic and social systems to natural systems, the "farms" of their lives.

The Problem: Alternate Centers

Let me share with you some examples of the problem. Then I will suggest the principle-centered solution.

     

  • Some executives justify heavy-handed means in the name of virtuous ends. They say that "business is business" and that "ethics" and "principles" sometimes have to take a back seat to profits. Many see no correlation between the quality of their personal lives at home and the quality of their communications at work. Because of the social and political environment inside their organizations and the fragmented markets outside, they think they can abuse relationships at will and still get results.

     

  • The head coach of a professional football team once told me that some players don't pay the price in the off-season. "They come to camp out of shape," he said. "Somehow they think they can fool me, make the team, and play great in the games."

     

  • When I ask in my seminars, "How many of you would agree that the vast majority of the work force possess far more capability, creativity, talent, initiative, and resourcefulness than their present jobs allow or require them to use?" The affirmative response is about 99 percent. We all admit that our greatest resources are being wasted.

     

  • Our heroes are often people who make a lot of money. And when some hero an actor, entertainer, athlete, or other professional suggests that we can get what we want by practicing hardball negotiation, closing win-lose deals, and playing by our own rules, we believe them, especially if social norms reinforce what they say.

     

  • Some parents don't pay the price with their kids, thinking they can fake it for the public image and then shout and slam the door. They are then shocked to see that their teenage kids experiment with drugs, alcohol, and sex to fill the void in their lives.

     

  • When I invited one executive to involve all his people and take six months to write a corporate mission statement, he said, "You don't understand, Stephen. We will whip this baby out this weekend." I see people trying to do it all over a weekend trying to rebuild their marriage on a weekend, trying to change a company culture on a weekend, trying to pump out a major new business proposal. Some things just can't be done over a weekend.

     

  • Many executives take criticism personally because they are emotionally dependent on their employees' acceptance of them. A state of collusion is established where executives and employees need each other's weaknesses to validate their perceptions of each other and to justify their own lack of production.

     

  • In management, everything goes to measurement. July belongs to the operators, but December belongs to the controllers. And the figures are manipulated at the end of the year to make them look good. The numbers are supposed to be precise and objective, but everyone knows they are based on subjective assumptions.

     

  • Most people are turned off by "motivational" speakers who have nothing more to share than entertaining stories mingled with "motherhood and apple pie" platitudes; they want substance; they want process; they want more than aspirin and band-aids for acute pain. They want to solve their chronic problems and achieve long-term results.

     

  • I once spoke to a group of executives at a training conference and discovered that they were bitter because the CEO had "forced" them to "come and sit for four days to listen to a bunch of abstract thoughts." They were part of a paternalistic culture that saw training as an expense, not an investment. Their organization managed people as things.

     

  • In school, we ask students to tell us what we told them; we test them on our lectures. They figure out the system, and then they party, procrastinate, and cram to get the grades. They think all of life operates on the same short-cut system.

The Solution: Center on Principles

These are problems that common approaches can't solve. Quick, easy, free, and fun approaches won't work on the "farms" of our lives because there we're subject to natural laws and governing principles. Natural laws, based upon principles, operate regardless of our awareness of them or our obedience to them.

Often habits of ineffectiveness are rooted in our social conditioning toward quick-fix, short-term thinking. In school, many of us procrastinate and then successfully cram for tests. But does cramming work on a farm? Can you go two weeks without milking the cow, and then get out there and milk like crazy? Can you "forget" to plant in the spring, goof off all summer, and then hit the ground real hard in the fall to bring in the harvest? We might laugh at such ludicrous approaches in agriculture, but then in academic environments, we might cram to get grades and degrees.

The only thing that endures over time is the law of the farm: I must prepare the ground, put in the seed, cultivate, weed, water, and nurture growth. So also in a business or a marriage there is no quick fix where you can just move in and magically make everything right with a positive mental attitude and a package of success formulas.

Correct principles are like compasses: they are always pointing the way. And if we know how to read them, we won't get lost, confused, or fooled by conflicting voices and values. Principles such as fairness, equity, justice, integrity, honesty, and trust are not invented by us: they are the laws of the universe that pertain to human relationships and organizations. They are part of the human condition, consciousness, and conscience.

People instinctively trust those whose personalities are founded upon correct principles. We have evidence of this in our long-term relationships. We learn that technique is relatively unimportant compared to trust, which is the result of our trustworthiness over time. When trust is high, we communicate easily, effortlessly, instantaneously. We can make mistakes, and others will still capture our meaning. But when trust is low, communication is exhausting, time-consuming, ineffective, and inordinately difficult.

Most people would rather work on their personality than on their character. The former may involve learning a new skill, style, or image, but the latter involves changing habits, developing virtues, disciplining appetites and passions, keeping promises, and being considerate of the feelings and convictions of others. Character development is the best manifestation of our maturity. To value oneself and, at the same time, subordinate oneself to higher purposes and principles is the paradoxical essence of highest humanity and the foundation of effective leadership.

Principle-centered leaders are men and women of character who work with competence "on farms" with "seed and soil" and who work in harmony with natural, "true north" principles and with the law of the harvest. They build those principles into the center of their lives, into the center of their relationships, into the center of their communications and contracts, into their management processes, and into their mission statements.

The Hypnotic Power of Confusion

"Did you walk to work or carry a lunch?"

Huh?

My father asked me that question more than 25 years ago. I still remember it. Why? Because it's a ridiculous question.

A famous comedian in the 1950s used to ask people, "Got a banana?" The question might make sense if asked in the right situation, but he asked it everywhere. I've forgotten the name of the comedian, but I still recall his question. Why? Because it's strange.

As I write this, I am creating new business cards for myself. I decided to add a confusing line to it. After some fun brainstorming with my girlfriend, I settled on, "Ask me about the monkey."

Why is "Ask me about the monkey?" worth putting on my business card? As with my father's question and the comedian's question, it stops your brain in its tracks. It makes you pause. It makes you focus on ME. The theory is that once you stop someone with a confusing line, you can then implant a hypnotic command right after it.

In other words, if I write something like, "Apples desk fly dirt," and then follow it with, "Read my new ebook," the chances are very high that you are going to want to read my new ebook.

Why? Because the first line jammed your mind, and the second line slipped into your brain while you weren't looking. I've just upped the odds that you will buy my new e-book. And if you don't, of course, it doesn't matter because I never really told you to go buy it. See?

The same thing will happen on my new business cards. Since I'm now known as "The World's First Hypnotic Marketer," I wanted a strange, confusing line on my new card. When someone sees, "Ask me about the monkey," and then asks me about the monkey, I can simply point out that I practice hypnotic selling and I just got them to do what I wanted.

The Japanese practice this "hypnotic confusion," but probably unknowingly. A friend of mine who flew to Japan reported to me that the English phrases on all the Japanese products were bizarre. A tube of toothpaste might say, "Green days you not sing." A box of cookies might say, "Wood above fish."

How can you use this secret right now? Don't be afraid to be confusing. People tend to sort out whatever you say anyway and make sense out of it using their own terms. If you are describing your product in great detail, be willing to toss in something odd. It may increase sales.

Achieving Your Dreams

While most people spend most of their lives struggling to earn a living, a much smaller number seem to have everything going their way. When you allow your dreams to pull you, they unleash a creative force that can overpower any obstacle in your path. To unleash this power, though, your dreams must be well defined. A fuzzy future has little pulling power. Well-defined dreams are not fuzzy. Wishes are fuzzy. To really achieve your dreams, to really have your future plans pull you forward, your dreams must be vivid.

If you've ever hiked a fourteen thousand-foot peak in the Rocky Mountains, one thought has surely come to mind "How did the settlers of this country do it?" How did they get from the East Coast to the West Coast? Carrying one day's supply of food and water is hard enough. Can you imagine hauling all of your worldly goods with you . . . mile after mile, day after day, month after month? These people had big dreams. They had ambition. They didn't focus on the hardship of getting up the mountain.

In their minds, they were already on the other side - their bodies just hadn't gotten them there yet! Despite all of their pains and struggles, all of the births and deaths along the way, those who made it to the other side had a single vision: to reach the land of continuous sunshine and extraordinary wealth. To start over where anything and everything was possible. Their dreams were stronger than the obstacles in their way.

You've got to be a dreamer. You've got to envision the future. You've got to see California while you're climbing fourteen thousand-foot peaks. You've got to see the finish line while you're running the race. You've got to hear the cheers when you're in the middle of a monster project. And you've got to be willing to put yourself through the paces of doing the uncomfortable until it becomes comfortable. Because that's how you realize your dreams.

Mind Power: Actionalize the

Law of Attraction!

By understand the universal Law of Attraction, together with massive bold actions, you have the power to manifest your desires into reality. The steps are actually quite simple.

1)Define your intention. Be clear and specific about what you want. Pen down your intention. Make it as specific as possible. If you desire a car, go beyond specifying the brand and down to the color and what it looks like from the inside and outside. Also, state when you want to have it – write down your deadline.

2)Create the experience in your mind. This is a very important step in the process of applying the law of attraction that it is sometimes overlooked. What do I mean by “creating?” Imagine yourself in a situation where you already have, are, or doing what you want. For example, imagine that you are outside your dream house then walking in – first-person point of view. You go to the living room – which is designed exactly to your taste – and sit down to relax. You take the remote control to turn on your flat-screen TV. Later, you smell the delicious aroma of your favorite dish wafting from the kitchen.

3)Affirm that is has already happened. Believe that that dream house is already yours. In your mind, you have already “ordered” it from the universe – it is only a question of when you will have it, not if you will have it. Affirming is a very important step – without belief, your intention loses power.

4)Take massive bold actions. By presenting your desire to the universe, the law of attraction works to attract the people, situations and opportunities to bring you to your goal. The next thing that is crucial to your success is to stay alert and sharp when these factors are presented to you and take the actions needed.

Do all of the above and what was once your desire will become a reality.
 

Developing Intuition

Ever have that gut feeling about something - but just don't know what that message is or where it's coming from? Well that gut feeling is really your intuition. And just what is intuition? Think of intuition as a partner - someone who only wants to help you and guide you. The only problem with this partner is that it doesn't speak the same language as you. That is; it doesn't always spell things out for you and give you instructions in terms you'll understand. In order to develop your intuition - you have to first understand it's language - and this is often the tricky part.

How Intuition Works - Understanding it's Language.

Intuition sends us messages in different forms all the time, everyday. Sometimes intuition can be that gut feeling that I just mentioned - when you know something - but just don't have anything to substantiate what you know. For example: last week I was driving on the highway - I had at least another hour to go before I got close to my destination. A limousine went speeding by me - and for a moment I thought about tagging along behind him - but something just didn't sit right. I chose not to speed with him and stayed where I was. About a half-hour later I saw the same limousine pulled over along the side of the road getting a speeding ticket and thought - that could have been me - good thing I stayed where I was. Here's another example; several years ago I was in Seattle - a city I'm somewhat familiar with but not completely knowledgeable of all the streets. I recall driving along near Pike Street Market - trying to figure out how to get back on to highway 5 and head north. Finally I figured out how to get back on the highway - and decided to speed up a little - but the car in front of me was going rather slow so I thought about passing it - but again something didn't sit right-so I just stayed behind him. A minute later another car zipped past us both - it was not more than 20-feet ahead of us going through a green light when another car smashed into it - the other car was going through a red light. We had to stay and talk to the police - but again my instincts saved me - that could have been me in the accident had I chose to pass the car a minute earlier - but I trusted my gut and stayed put.

I remember when I was in an investigative Reporter in New York and I was interviewing the Chief of Detectives for the New York City Police Department. It was his last day on the job before starting a new life as a public citizen now that he was retiring. He had spent 25 years on the job and let me tell you - he'd seen just about everything. I asked him: "How can an average citizen, walking down Broadway just after sunset, protect himself or herself from a mugger? No everybody carries mace or has self-defense training? What can Miss. Or Mr. Average do to protect themselves?" I'll never forget his response. This elderly man, with his receding gray hair, leaned forward and said: "Karim, at some point, just before something bad is going to happen to you - those little hairs on the back of your neck stand up. They're telling you not to cross the street, not to go further, to stop in your track and turn around - go in a direction where help can be found. If the average person paid attention to that - paid attention to those little hairs standing up on the back of their necks - they'd live a long time." Those little hairs stand up because your intuition is trying to tell you not to do something or warn you of imminent danger so - you then have to take the necessary steps to get out of the situation as quickly as possible. Quite simply - intuition can save your life if you just listen to it.

Fellow readers - I can't tell you how many times my intuition has saved me. There are probably numerous other times that my intuition has saved me and I'm not even aware of those instances. These are situations when I followed my instincts but don't know what the outcome would have been had I not followed them. Sometimes we won't know what would have happened if we didn't follow our instincts.

Intuition comes in many forms - like I said at the beginning - think of intuition as a partner trying to help you and guide you along the way - so that no harm comes to you. Sometimes this partner will speak with a feeling, sometimes it will speak with words through another person, sometimes it will give you signals, sometimes it will simply try to stop you from doing something that isn't good for you. We have to understand how it is speaking to us and when it is speaking to us. Let's go over some of the examples I just mentioned.

I've gone over how intuition speaks with feeling. Sometimes it's a gut feeling - an overwhelming feeling that you should do something, avoid something or follow up on something. Sometimes intuition will speak with words through someone else. For example: you may be thinking about buying a new home but you're not sure what area. The first person you speak to mentions a particular area, the next person you speak to mentions the same area and then a third person mentions the same area - then you're looking in the paper and you see an article praising the area that you're friends were telling you about. In this case your intuition is likely trying to get you to consider that certain area - and perhaps it's time to take a look.

Sometimes intuition will try to give you signals - the article in the newspaper in the above example is a signal. Seeing things that correspond with what you are trying to find an answer to is a signal. Sometimes intuition will try to stop you from taking a certain course of action. You may want to buy a home in a certain area - but everything you find is not up to your standard or way out of your price range. Here you may be getting a signal to look in another area, be patient until you find the right place, or think about other options. You may be trying to get a certain job at a certain place - but there are no openings and nothing is coming up. Intuition may be telling you to look for other options and not pursue the job you are so set on.

In all cases - the message isn't always as clear as we would like it to be. The way intuition speaks to us isn't always easy to understand. But if you keep testing it and keep searching the answer will become clear. The feeling will be overwhelming. The signals will be repeated and clear. The messages from other people will be repeated over and over again. Then the message becomes clear. Sometimes you may not understand the message until years later. But it will all make sense at some point - and that point is when the time is right.

The common element in all of the situations that I just mentions is that in every case there was a question involved. If you want to find an answer to something and you will always get a response. You just have to understand the message. The first time you get the response - you may not understand it and it may not be clear. If you're not sure - don't do anything - wait until you get another message and see if it's along the same lines as the original message. The key is not to be fooled by your mind. Your mind is not your intuition - so don't think that when you ask for something you'll get an immediate answer from your mind - that's not an answer. That's just your mind playing tricks with you.

So how can we get our intuition to help us and how can we better understand the answer?

If you want to get guidance from your intuition first decide what it is you want - then ask for an answer. For example: you want to buy a new home - say I want to buy a new home and I want to know what area I should buy in. What area should I buy my home in? Where should I buy my new home? Keep repeating the question. Then tell yourself that you have the answer - say I know where to buy my new home. Then let go. Don't expect an answer immediately. If you get one in your mind - it's not the answer - it's just your mind and ego playing tricks with you. Let go. Forget about it. The next step is often the most difficult - trust that the answer will come at the right time. As human beings we like to take control of things - we like to know what is going to happen and we want to make things happen. But sometimes you can't - sometimes you just have to be patient and wait for the answer - trusting that it will come at exactly the right time. When it does come - you'll know and you'll follow through. You can do the above exercise for anything you want or for any answer you are seeking. In time you will get the answer - but it will be at the right time - and not on your time.

Another thing that you can do to develop your intuition is to meditate and stay positive. By meditating you calm your mind and by staying positive you become more positive and understand that you will get the answer. The Creating Power System will teach you how to develop your intuition, it will teach you how to better understand the messages your intuition is sending you, Creating Power will teach you how to meditate so you get answers and how to stay positive so the answers come naturally and easily.

Finally - I said that in some cases we don't know the outcome had we not followed our intuition. This is very important because once you learn how to trust your intuition you won't need the reassurance of knowing what would have happened had you not followed your intuition. We can't always know everything and at some point we have to trust and let go - once you learn to do that everything will flow to you naturally and easily.

  

The Law of Attraction :

 

'the Simplest and Strongest in the Universe'

 

Each individual has a lot of untapped potential in himself. Are you aware that every experience that you have undergone in life till now is because of your thoughts and emotions behind these thoughts? Examine your life. You are happy with some of the conditions and unhappy with some. Most of us end up believing that we are a victim of destiny. But that is far away from truth. Life is a beautiful game and like every game it also has Laws which we need to understand in depth to win this game.

 

I am sure no one contradicts the law of gravity. No matter we believe it nor not it never fails to be active. Same is the case with Universal Laws. They exist and affect our lives even though we are not conscious about them. Gravity is perhaps the weakest of all Universal Laws. It only affects the earth, but the Universal Laws affect all dimensions of each being and object in this Universe.The Law of Attraction, is undoubtedly the strongest of all the Universal Laws. To put it in few words “Like attracts like” or “That which is likened unto itself is drawn”. It means that whatever we focus on by means of our thoughts, we will have it in our life.

If we focus on what we want we will attract it, on the other hand, if we focus on what we don’t want we will attract it too!I know what you must be thinking. You must be wondering that if all I have said above is true what is reason you were not aware of it. Or some of you must be wondering why don’t you have the money you have wished for years now.The Law is very simple. Our thoughts are very haphazard and short living.

For instance, when you say “ I want a brand new trendy sportscar”, the same moment the Universe begins deliberations for your wish to become a reality. But then in the same breath you say “But I can’t afford it” and you dispel all that Universe was deliberating to make your wish come true.Now that you are aware about the mechanism of the Law, make use of it. When you wish for something, say , a sportscar, but feel you can’t afford it become aware that you are transmitting thoughts which convey the message of scarcity.

So you end up with being more scarce. So by changing our thoughts and emotions we can use them like a magnet to attract what we want.To give another instance, let us consider money. You have been wanting money for a long time now. Just examine what you feel each time you think about money. Do you feel happy, elated or do you end up angry and disappointed? You may be even envious of those of have it.

My experience says that most people are always emotionally confused when it comes to money. You need not worry. No matter how sad or frustrated you have felt, you can still change it. Just consciously practice the Law of Attraction by altering your thoughts and feelings and you will have money flowing into your life soon.The Law of Attraction is a guiding beacon for everyone who wants to change conditions of his/her life. You just need to understand how this law works and use it to your benefit.

Initiate activities to alter your thoughts and you can change a lot of things. What you should be aware is the kind of emotions and feelings you garner on a particular subject. That is a true measure of how you feel. Another scale to measure is the conditions of your life. Your emotions will be of the greatest assistance to you when you want to judge the energy and waves that you are transmitting. Emotions never lie.
